It's been months in the making, but my cover of "Everlong" has finally been released. It's funny that this release coincides with the end of the semester--my students have been submitting final papers and waiting to see how they did, and now I find myself feeling a bit like I used to when I was in the same position.
But releasing music is different, and it's definitely a different kind of composing/publishing process than I'm used to. As a writing instructor, one of the things I always tell my students to do is identify their audience. While it's easy enough to do that for academic or professional writing, I'm finding myself wondering who my audience is. Obviously, all music has a style and genre, but people are into such different things musically that it's hard to envision an audience of people as opposed to an audience of songs. So maybe that's what I'll do in the future: I'll think of my work as interacting first with other songs, and by extension, the people that listen to them.
In the mean time, it's Memorial Day, so I'm spending time cooking out with family. Hope you're up to something fun, too!
